RALEIGH—A man shot by a Wake County Deputy has died from his injuries.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. Saturday when authorities received a call about a man threatening to commit suicide in a neighborhood near Live Oak Trail and Pinecrest Road.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they say Adam Carter, 25, confronted a deputy with a knife. The deputy then fired at Carter. Carter was take to WakeMed, where he later died.
"We're trained. Hopefully training kicks in. Our safety is very important. The victims safety is important too but we have to do what we have to do when we get to a scene and whatever is presented to us," said Wake County Sheriff Donny Hairston.
Authorities did not have many details Saturday about what sparked the incident. Residents said they were stunned by the shooting.
"I've seen plenty of people acting up and stuff like that before but I've never seen somebody pop out with an assault rifle and then to watch somebody brought out on a stretcher after that obviously wasn't moving," neighbor Bradley Bliss
Authorities say First Class Deputy Tavares Thompson has served with the Sheriff's Office since 2007. The SBI is now handling the investigation.
