CHARLOTTE—Elevation Church is answering a call to action, and one family's prayers. The project is part of Love Week which runs Feb. 11 through Feb. 19. It is a week where the community comes together to serve others.
Volunteers did not waste any time getting to work on 612 Pinoca Street on Thursday. People constructed walls, framing and prepared trusses. Volunteer T.A. Smith said they only have eight days to build a four bedroom, two bath single family home.
"It was a little bit above freezing and it takes some people giving of themselves to come out and make a difference in someone else's life," said Smith.
Nearly two dozen members of Elevation Church rolled up their sleeves for the Habitat for Humanity build. It was of Love Week which starts Feb. 11, a call for people in the community to come out and serve others.
The church started the initiative in 2010 joining with other churches to volunteer 10,000 service hours. Last year they topped 34,000 hours. This year's goal is 50,000 hours. Second-year volunteer Steve Esposito said the volunteers are off to a good start.
"Love Week is about volunteering helping those less fortunate throughout the Charlotte region," said Esposito.
Habitat plans to give the keys to the new owners on Feb. 18. The husband, wife, and their three little girls are a Montangard refugee family from Vietnam.
