GREENSBORO—Anyone who might be feeling lucky, Wednesday night is the night to play the Powerball lottery.

After the winnings rolled over into a new game a dozen times before, the jackpot now stands at $250 million. It is the first major jackpot since lottery officials went to a $2 tickets after Jan. 1.

The looming windfall means big business for retailers.

“I am coming to get the winning lottery tickets, like I do every week. At this point, $250 would be good for me, so $250 million is beyond my imagination, really,” said Powerball customer Tabbatha Baker.

When the Powerball hits these mega jackpots, that also means mega business for retailers across our state. Sheetz Manager Ernie Cuoco it means a boost in sales leading up to the big drawing.

“We do see a definite increase in sales, during this time when the jackpots get up there. We get a lot of people who normally don't play. As it gets closer and closer, some people are really superstitious. They'd rather come in at the last minute and get their ticket as opposed to getting it too early. They figure the numbers generate differently,” said Cuoco.

The multi-state lottery association which owns the game improved people's chances of winning the jackpot earlier this year. Now instead of a 1-in-195-million chance, people now have a 1-in-a-175-million chance.
