SALISBURY – While the latest unemployment numbers showed an improving job market, not so for teenagers. The 16- to 19-year-old age group remains the least likely to find a job.

"We hire them on a regular basis for in the summer," said Mike Fuller, owner of Innes Street Drug in Downtown Salisbury.

But he said most of his positions are filled well before summer by students who come back year after year.

"So those slots are already filled, but if someone were to come in and we had a need, yes we would look at them," he said.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows teenagers have the highest unemployment rate.

In North Carolina , the average unemployment rate for the 16- to 19-year-old group is 32 percent, nearly one in three teens who want a job can't find one.

"Teenagers are competing with people that are going to be year-round, and the employers know that," said Fuller.

If the job picture doesn't improve, teens will face a fourth straight Summer of unemployment numbers above 20 percent, a level not seen since 1981.
