MIDLAND, N.C. — Boaz Elementary school in Alabama released 500 red balloons, as part of a reading project, and a few of them are appearing in North Carolina.
The students wanted whoever found the balloon to call or write, sharing their favorite book title. Boaz Elementary Principal Beth Scott said it rained all day when they released the balloons last Wednesday.
It took less than 24-hours for the balloons to make it to Midland, more than 300 miles away.
“We were really afraid that they weren't going to get up there because it was raining so hard. and we decided that we were going to do it, whether it was raining or not," said Scott.
A family in Cabarrus County found one on their property less than 24-hours after it left the town of Boaz and another turned up in Gaston County. Other balloons were found in Bessimer City and Six Mile, S.C.
"I never thought that would happen, I would think maybe 10 miles, 20 miles, but not 400 miles. It's pretty incredible," said Midland resident Michelle Parks.
