CHARLOTTE—With the Super Bowl a day away, for many it is a weekend filled with family, football, and lots of food. However during this festive time, area Boy Scouts are also looking out for those having a difficult time putting a good meal on the table with their annual Scouting for Food drive.
The week-long drive began Saturday morning. Throughout next week, Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts will be going door to door collecting canned goods for the Loaves and Fishes food bank.
People can also drop off items at their local Harris Teeter store, or at the arboretum where bins are already in place ready for donations.
The food drive is an annual tradition for the Scouts. Last year, the Scouts collected more than 175,000 pounds of food. All donations that helped Loaves and Fishes provide groceries for more than 114,000 people in 2011.
The Boy Scouts are hoping to collect even more food this year as the need is constantly increasing.
“It has grown every year. Last year we set a record, this year our goal is 175,000 pounds. So we are trying to exceed what we did last year,” said Lodge Chief Taylor Morgan.
Any non-perishable item is accepted at the food drive but priority items include canned meat, canned fruit, 100 percent juice, canned pasta and cereal.
