FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville resident Ronald Marrero started this year looking for a full-time job.
"I'm going to school now so I try to keep myself occupied with that and then you got the homework that needs to be due so it's kind of like a little gap that you have to work with in terms of time constraint to job search," said Marrero.
As former military he's hoping that experience will help him find permanent work that will give him a sustainable income while he also takes classes.
Veterans like Marrero are the focus of a new job initiative from President Barack Obama.
Speaking in Virginia Friday the president announced a new commitment to veteran employment.
"Our veterans are some of the most highly-trained, highly-educated, highly-skilled workers that we've got," said Obama. "These are Americans that every business should be competing to attract. These are Americans we want to keep serving here at home as we rebuild this country."
The plan proposes $1 billion to develop a Veteran Job Corp Conservation Program to put as many as 20,000 veterans back to work over the next five years. It also sets up grant funding to hire post 9/11 veterans as police officers and firefighters.
In addition to the president's initiative, there is also 'Hiring our Heroes', a program launched last year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in an effort to find jobs for veterans.
Next week the program will stop at the Crown Center here in Fayetteville where they will host a job fair for veterans.
"Whatever their branch of service is they deserve an opportunity to make a living and this certainly is part of that," said Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce CEO Doug Peters.
Part of a movement that wants to put those who have served our country to work.
