LANDIS, N.C. -- More than a dozen crews and 45 firefighters from across Rowan County responded Thursday morning to the old Parkdale Mill plant on Meriah Street. By the time they arrived at 4 a.m., flames were already shooting out of the building.

"The first unit arrived at the scene and we had heavy fire showing from the roof area," Chief Douglas Linn with the Landis Fire Department explained.

Crews were able to quickly get the fire contained and under control.

The fire started in the back of the mill. All of the businesses were in the front and most didn't sustained any damage. All except John Herron's, the Cotton Mill Mushroom Farm.

"Right now my biggest concern is the water coming through the ceiling," Herron explained.

Herron grows nearly half a dozen varieties of mushrooms in the basement, where several inches of water came rushing in when crews tried to put out the fire.

"Once the mushrooms get the smoke on them then they're done," he said.

Herron's mushrooms and business were spared, like the other two tenants in the building.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion but he is expected to be OK. No one else was injured.
