CHARLOTTE -- Dozens of people voiced their frustrations to state leaders at a town hall meeting Wednesday night.
The meeting centered around reparations for victims of a state-sponsored sterilization program called Eugenics.
From the 1920s to the 1970s, more than 7,000 people were sterilized, including Elaine Riddick.
"I went into the hospital to have my son and they sterilized me," she said. "I wasn't aware of it at the time I thought I was going in to have a baby."
State leaders are currently proposing paying victims $50,000 a piece in reparations. Victims like Riddick said that amount is a slap in the face.
“When I first started I actually sued the state for $1 million which I didn't get," said Riddick. "It went to the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court refused to hear my case, so me right now I think $1 million would be a step in the right direction for me."
Officials believe 1,500 to 2,000 victims are still living. The current proposal would also only give them three years to come forward.
