HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Some Charlotte students are learning more about nuclear science this week.

Home-schooled middle- and high-schoolers went to McGuire Nuclear Station for a trip to the Energy Explorium and hands-on activities.

It's in conjunction with National Nuclear Science Week.

Officials with Duke Energy say it's a great way for kids to find out about some of the careers available to them.

"Some of the things that the homeschoolers are learning today about how nuclear energy is generated or produced, the type of folks that work here, the training that they have to have to work in a nuclear power plant, radiation, the history of radiation, about the fuel that we use, and general nuclear energy issues,” said Hailey Wilson of Duke Energy.

The goal of nuclear science week is to raise awareness about nuclear science's benefits to the community.
