CHARLOTTE – A tentative agreement, several years in the making, has been reached between US Airways and its flight attendants. The company made the announcement overnight going into Friday.
"Certainly you don't want to have two separate groups of employees. We merged with America West Airlines back in September of 2005, and we have flight attendants who came from the America West side of our family, and we have flight attendants who came from the US Airways side of our family, and you know, you need everybody working together under the same contract because they're doing the same job,” said Michelle Mohr, spokesperson for US Airways.
Until now, neither flight attendants nor pilots had been able to reach a joint contract since the merger. The flight attendants had been demanding salary increases and better benefits and finally, they reached a collective bargaining agreement.
"We're just so pleased that the new agreement recognizes the contributions of our flight attendants,” said Mohr.
US Airways is deferring the release of details to AFA, but they will discuss where they go from here.
"Before the tentative agreement can be put to a ratification vote, which means that our flight attendants agree on this, the AFA, or Association of Flight Attendants, master executive counsels that represent our flight attendant groups must first approve the agreement, and then they take it to their members," said Mohr.
Obviously while this is good news for US Airways and the Association of Flight Attendants, negotiations are still underway between US Airways and other groups, such as the pilots association.
"That's very good news. I hope that the flight attendants, after reviewing the contract, all think it's a good deal for them, and I hope that they can ratify this contract and we can move forward," said Captain James Ray, media chairman for the US Airways Pilots Association.
The pilots association has been in negotiations for years as well. Like the flight attendants, salary and benefits are at the top of their list. They say now, the pilot's contract will be the last hurdle to complete the US Airways-America West merger.
"So we're hopeful that now that the flight attendant contract is behind them, they can put their full effort on the pilot contract, and we can get closure,” said Ray.
News 14 Carolina did put out several calls to local representatives with the Association of Flight Attendants, but none returned the calls.
Mohr said Friday that negotiations with the pilots' association have been recessed, which isn't unusual. She said it was determined by the National Mediation Board and for now, no more mediating talks are scheduled.
