RALEIGH – A Winston-Salem native and UNC graduate was among five people killed Tuesday in a small plane crash on a New Jersey interstate.
Jeffrey Buckalew was the pilot and owner of the plane, according to CNN. His wife, Connie; their two children, Jackson and Meriwether; and a business associate also died in the crash.
The plane was headed to suburban Atlanta when it crashed about 15 minutes after takeoff. Wreckage was spread a half-mile.
Buckalew grew up in Winston-Salem, attended UNC as an undergrad and later earned his MBA there. He also served on the Board of Visitors.
The National Transportation Safety Board is continuing its investigation.
