THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Gov. Bev Perdue says she was being sarcastic when she made remarks Tuesday about suspending the next congressional election.

While attending a summit in Thomasville, Perdue clarified the comments made to a Rotary Club in Cary. The governor had called on Congress to "get over partisan bickering," saying: "I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover."

"If people want to take something like this seriously, they're going to take it seriously,” said Perdue Wednesday. β€œIt was a point answering a gentleman's question. It was taken out of context from my perspective, but, honest to goodness, who would think something like that would be said seriously. It's ridiculous to have this kind of discussion."

Perdue says her point was that voters really need to encourage elected leaders to work together and solve America's problems.

Meanwhile, State Senate leader Phil Berger released a statement on Perdue's remarks Tuesday saying "I want to state clearly, on the record, that I do not support suspending our next gubernatorial election."
