CHARLOTTE -- A new controversial taxi agreement is now in effect at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Now, you'll be seeing only three cab companies serving airport customers, as opposed to 12.
The new agreement was approved by the city council a month ago after more than an hour of debate as drivers and attorneys packed the government center. The plan had many people speaking out against it saying it would cost many drivers their jobs.
The winning companies were Crown Cab, Taxi USA and City Cab. Last week, a superior court judge granted two other companies a temporary injunction, allowing them to continue working at the airport for 10 days. Those companies, Speedy and Diamond Cabs, have lawsuits pending over the matter.
Aviation Director Jerry Orr said an updated taxi system is better for passengers and creates new rules on which vehicles can be used by the three companies.
This is the first time in 20 years that the airport's taxi contract system has been adjusted.
