CHARLOTTE – There's a big surprise for three North Carolina universities. The owner of Park Road Shopping Center has given the property to Queens University of Charlotte, Wingate University and Wake Forest University to help fund scholarships.
Porter Byrum will continue to manage the shopping center, which has been in operation since 1956.
Wake Forest will receive the largest portion of the financial gift. The rest is being split between Queens and Wingate.
Byrum attended Wake Forest tuition-free because his father was a baptist minister. He also fought in World War II and had a successful law career.
In a statement issued by Wake Forest, Byrum said, "Education gave me an opportunity in life. It is my privilege to be able to give that same opportunity to others."
