CHARLOTTE -- Hundreds gathered at the Olde Sycamore Golf Club in Charlotte Monday for the eighth annual Steven Coakley Foundation Golf Tournament. Coakley was a New York firefighter killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Family members who live in Charlotte started the foundation in his name.

The news of Osama bin Laden's death dominated the conversation on the course. In addition to the firefighters from the Carolinas, about a dozen New York firefighters were on hand to pay tribute to one of their own.

"We do a lot of things that Stevie used to do," said Frank Poulin, a battalion chief for NYFD. "We have fun, have a good time and you're doing it for a purpose so we won't forget."

They travel down to the Queen City to play in the tournament every year but Monday it was a little more special.

Organizers are doing things a little different this year. At the fourth tee, it's something very unique. There is part of a steel beam from the World Trade Center on 9/11 and organizers say it's one more thing reminding everyone while they're out there.

"Anyone who goes over and looks at the piece of steel and has a sense of how heavy it is," said Edmund Walker, the director of the Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation. "It's just a minute piece of what happened on that day."
