CHARLOTTE -- Jury deliberations will continue Tuesday morning in the Gary Daniels murder trial. Just after 5 p.m., the judge dismissed jurors for the day, after the first full day of deliberations.
Daniels is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend, 18-year-old Charney Watt, in 2009.
At a little after 4 p.m. Monday, jurors asked the judge for the definitions of first- and second-degree murder. The rest of the day they spent behind closed doors.
On Friday, jurors asked for another look at Daniels' videotaped confession detailing the shooting and the moments leading up to it.
Specifically, jurors wanted to hear the part of the confession where Daniels said "God told him to shoot Watt." They also listened in again during the portion where Daniels said Watt told him to shoot her saying, "pull the trigger, if it's my time to die -- it's my time to die."
During closing arguments in this case Daniels' attorney said there isn't enough evidence to find his client guilty. But Assistant District Attorney Beth Greene said Daniels killed Watt because he was abusive and his Watt wanted to leave him.
Jurors must decide if Daniels is guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.
