MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A new program through Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is helping disabled veterans get back to work.

SMP Motorsports, in Mooresville, will give veterans hands-on training that can land them a job. Founder Sue Roberson is the came up with operation. She worked with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for 14 months to help get it started.

"This is about making them count. The school is a tool to help [veterans]. Hopefully we'll get them to the point where they are not laying on the couch,” said Roberson.

Disabled veterans can enroll for 15 credit hours, working toward a certification in Motorsports Management Technology.

"We're giving them a reason to move forward, there are so many right now who do not have a purpose,” said Richmond Gage, with RCCC . “We're going to give these veterans a purpose for the future."

The course will be a combination of lab type classes, along with hands on training at the garage. Classes begin May 18.
