CHARLOTTE – For the past decade, about 280 pedestrians every year have been hit by cars in Mecklenburg County. Since 2000, 58 pedestrians have been killed.

Monday, a father and son crossing Billy Graham Parkway were hit by a car. The father didn't survive. And just last week, a family walking in their neighborhood were hit by a driver. The grandfather and mother didn't survive.

Tuesday afternoon, two friends who walk everyday try to cross Billy Graham Parkway. They look, and look, and look again before leaving the sidewalk.

"We just walk around this area," said Alise Alexander.

She and Lashanna Shepherd watch the pedestrian crossing signs. "You just have to be patient and I think that's where a lot of people lack is patience," said Alexander.

Even with extra safety measures like automated crosswalks, pedestrians who cross busy intersections know they have to take extra precaution.

"People are still trying to zip through the intersection, despite the fact that we're still almost in their way," said Jeffrey Cook. He and his wife cross Billy Graham Parkway everyday to visit a friend who works at Cracker Barrel.

"Basically it's the drivers, they need to learn how to watch for pedestrians cause it's the law. Period," said Michelle Cook.

The Charlotte Department of Transportation has a safety video and more pedestrian safety information on their website.
