HARRISBURG, N.C. -- The spirit of a fallen soldier is living on through a cookbook. Spc. Christopher Barton would've turned 23 this past Friday. He was killed in the line of duty last May. A group of soldiers' mothers in his hometown of Harrisburg created a support group to help during the tough times. Now, they created a cookbook to raise money for the Barton Scholarship Fund.

"We decided when Chris died, we wanted to do something," said cookbook co-author Meg Haskins.

The book is called Hometown Heroes. The opening page is a dedicated to Barton. The book also honors all of their sons and husbands who are still serving overseas.

"We ended up on 537 recipes," said Haskins. "They're all kind of Southern flair, family favorite recipes." Haskins favorite recipe is the pizza casserole, which she often made up for her son and others when they were younger.

The women want to sell the book to raise money for the Chris Barton Scholarship Fund. "Our original goal was 500 books with a $3,000 donation to his scholarship fund," said Haskins. Two weeks after printing she adds, "We're almost completely out."

"I'm really touched," said Lisa Underwood, the vice president of the Army Support Group. "I'm thrilled it sold like it did."

The group is using word of mouth and social media to advertise the book, which is now reaching beyond borders. Haskins says she's sent copies to people in 20 states and two other countries.

A re-order is in the plans, as the cookbook and Chris' memory spread. "It really feels good for Chris' spirit, because everyone who has the book is going to open that book and see his picture and it's like carrying his spirit on," said Haskins. "I think it touches people to have something to remember that by because it was the ultimate sacrifice."

All proceeds from the book go to the Barton Scholarship Fund at Central Piedmont Community College. The cookbook sells for $12.50. There are still a few copies left, but again, there are plans to republish.
