WILMINGTON – Navigating around the Port City is now a little more driver friendly. Wilmington City planners have started adding wayfinding signage near major intersections. Those are signs that have directional indicators to places like parks, roads, and attractions.
"When you visit another town or city one of things they remember is whether or not they had an easy time getting around or had a frustrating difficult time getting around," said Dylan Lee with the City of Wilmington.
Traveling through Wilmington comes with a lot of traffic and tourists unfamiliar with the roads.
"We recognized that and put a plan together and put together directional signage what we call wayfinding signage," said Lee.
Lee said, at the end of 2010, when the Independence Blvd. project was in the last phase of completion, some of the wayfinders started going up. So far, there are eight on Independence and a few at other intersections.
“In the coming year we will be working on North 3rd Street and Randall Parkway and we intend to include wayfinding signage on those roads when the work is finished," said Lee.
Wilmington resident Linda Currie said she is all about the signs. Anything that will make driving less confusing for visitors in Wilmington.
"So many of the signs your couldn't even read until you just got right up on them and by that time you would be in the wrong lane because there would only be one lane that says go straight," said Currie.
The NCDOT has come up with clear and uniform standards for the wayfinding signs, while ours do have the City of Wilmington logo, the size, number of destinations per sign and colors are all consistent with NCDOT standards.
"Green is a general destination and may be a road or just a directional thing, brown is more of a cultural resource or a recreational facility and blue is a service for the hospital or visitors center," said Lee.
A plan is in place for more wayfinding signs in Wilmington. More signs will be put in place as funding become available for future construction projects.
