TUCSON, Ariz. -- President Barack Obama has called on the nation to honor those slain and injured in the Arizona shootings by becoming better people.

Speaking before thousands at a memorial in Tucson, at the University of Arizona basketball arena, Obama implored Americans to talk to each other "in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.''

Obama said that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot point-blank in the head on Saturday, opened her eyes shortly after he visited her in the hospital. First lady Michelle Obama held the hand of Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly. The news brought cheers through the arena.

Obama told the crowed that Americans may not be able to stop all the evil in the world, but that how they treat one another is entirely up to them.
