FAYETTEVILLE -- One thousand Fayetteville children are set to receive special Christmas gifts Wednesday. The bicycle man, Moses Mathis, is ready to give away the bikes he spent the last several months repairing.

This isn't the first year bicycle man Moses Mathis will delight hundreds of children with a bicycle right before Christmas, but the challenges faced by Mathis this year make the give away even more special.

Earlier this year, Mathis learned the warehouse he usually worked out of would no longer be available to him. It took him until July before a generous donor agreed to lend him another warehouse for the remainder of the year, putting Mathis seriously behind schedule.

Although he usually gives away more than 1,000 bikes, Mathis said he realized this year it might be only 300 or 400 bikes. But with a lot of hard work and faithful volunteers, the bicycle man will be able to gift 1,000 children this year.

As Mathis worked on the final preparations Tuesday, he said all the effort is made worth while on give away day each year.

"I'll see the kids and the parents, and the hugs and the kisses and the thank you's," he said. "That's what it's all about."
