DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina senator is calling for the EPA to investigate Alcoa.
Sen. Stan Bingham, who represents Davidson and Guilford Counties, made the request for the formal criminal investigation. That is after a report alleged that Alcoa has knowingly released large quantities of hydraulic oil and mechanic grease into the Yadkin River at its hydroelectric facility for years.
Just last week, the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources revoked Alcoa's water quality certification because they said Alcoa intentionally withheld information about meeting water quality standards.
The company needs that certification to operate their hydroelectric dams. Alcoa denies withholding information and plans to challenge the ruling.
