MONROE -- Next week, N.C. Department of Transportation crews plan to make a handful of safety improvements to a deadly intersection in Union County. Two Wingate students, Mi'shawn Miller and Arielle Parker, died after their car was hit at the intersection of Old Pageland Road and Whitestore Road.

A DOT spokesperson says since the wreck, they plan to convert the intersection into a four-way stop, install larger stop signs and put in rumble strips.

Residents near the intersection say the improvements are a long time coming. "[It's for the] safety of commuters and I'm very grateful," said Amanda Maggard.

According to DOT, since 1990 there have been at least 62 wrecks and one fatality at the intersection. Neighbors argue that there have been many more than that.
