CHAPEL HILL -- University of North Carolina chancellor Holden Thorp and athletic director Dick Baddour will speak with the UNC System Board of Governors Thursday in Wilmington about the ongoing NCAA investigation into the Tar Heel football program.

"All of us have tried to stay away from trying to micromanage what goes on with the university," said board of governors member Dr. Dudley Flood.

For Flood and his colleagues, Thursday will mark a first formal briefing on the investigation.

"I think they're more than anxious. I think everybody is concerned about the image of the university, obviously. And almost always, rumor has it worse than fact does, so if we get the fact, we'll feel much better about that," he said.

So far, the facts are that the Tar Heels are down more than a dozen players and a coach. Associate head coach John Blake resigned Sunday, and on Monday, Baddour said the university is working toward a resolution.

“We will get it to a conclusion but we'll not rush to do it at the expense of doing it well and then being told we didn't do as thorough a job as we should do," Baddour said.

Thorp requested the chance to update the board of governors, and according board chairperson Hannah Gage, “[Thorp] felt there may be questions the board of governors members might have so they will attend to answer our questions. There's no formal report. We expect there will be significant interest."

"It has been my experience with Chancellor Thorp that he is very forthcoming. He will not cover up anything. He'll be direct and he'll be judicious. He will not drag it out," said Flood.
