RALEIGH — Of the hundreds of animals waiting for a home at the SPCA OF Wake County in Raleigh the most needy are those with special needs.

An example of a special needs pet is two-year-old stray rabbit Oliver, who's left eye was so injured when he was found shelter veterinarians had to remove it. This weekend finding havens for pets like Oliver are top priority for shelter organizers.

"Thousands of animals are dying every month due to pet over population and special needs animals, they may take a little longer to get adopted. So the faster we get them adopted from our animal shelter that means more lives that we can bring in and we can save," said Mondy Lamb with the SPCA of Wake County.

To help find these pets a home the SPCA is reducing their adoption fees by more than half of the normal cost. So special needs animals, cats and bunnies are only $30. FIV positive cats are only $5, and all of the dogs are $75 dollars.

"Make sure you know that he has a safe environment obviously with a rabbit he can't see anything you know since he's missing an eye so we just really want to make sure he has a safe secure environment," said Connie Swantko, adoptive pet parent.

Finding more willing adoptive pet parents for the other animals in need is now the SPCA's labor of love for the remainder of holiday weekend. The SPCA adoption special lasts through Monday.
