ATLANTA, Ga — The undermanned UNC football team almost turned a 20-point halftime deficit into an upset over LSU Saturday night.

The Tigers' Patrick Peterson had more than 250 yards on kickoff and punt returns, leading them to a 30-10 halftime lead. The Tar Heels scored two second-half touchdowns, but were unable to pull out the win. UNC was missing several key players because of NCAA investigations over player relationships with agents and possible academic violations.

"One thing that defines you is your character, your guts, your ability to compete, to never surrender. We didn't play this for any moral victories, we came here to play this game, to win the game and I'm proud of everybody the way they played the second half because they did what we asked them to do at halftime which was to come out, execute better, try to win one play at a time, one position at a time and give themselves the chance to get back into the game," said Head Coach Butch Davis.

The final score was 30 to 24. UNC takes on Georgia Tech on September 18.
