DILWORTH, N.C. — On Saturday, dozen's of runners and walkers took part in the first ever freedom 5K run to honor our military men and women in Charlotte.

Operation Home Front of North Carolina organized the event to honor the U.S. soldiers deployed within hours of the 9-11 attack and to raise money for enlisted families. One board member and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel explained what life is like for the low-level enlisted members his organizations helps.

“They are near the poverty level, food stamp level and all of a sudden they are going overseas—leaving a fragile family back home. That is really the beginning of Operation Home Front because someone had to take care of them,” said Col. Quincy Collins, (RET) U.S. Air Force.

On Sept. 11, Operation Home Front will hold walks at both Fort Bragg and Camp Lejuene to honor the sacrifice of our military. North Carolina is the nation’s third largest military state.
