CHAPEL HILL — Carolina's football team left for the opening game against LSU, but at least 12 of their own players did not make the trip.

School officials said six players including defensive ends Robert Quinn and Michael McAdoo. Cornerbacks Kendric Burney and Charles Brown. Receiver Greg Little and suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin were declared ineligible for the season opener for "violating school and/or NCAA rules."

Six more players are being held out of the game because of the ongoing investigation. Two probes into the university's athletics program continue regarding possible illegal contact with agents and academic violations involving a tutor who worked with players. UNC officials said three more players are still in jeopardy of missing the game. The school is working with the NCAA to determine their status.

The Tar Heels take on LSU on Saturday in Atlanta.
