RALEIGH— There is good news for Tar Heel fans.
The News 14 Carolina sports department learned on Friday night that linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter were cleared by the NCAA to play in Saturday's game against LSU in Atlanta.
NCAA officials also requested more information on safety Deunta Williams. UNC was not able to get that information in time for him to be available for the season opener. School officials said six players including defensive ends Robert Quinn and Michael McAdoo, Cornerbacks Kendric Burney and Charles Brown, Receiver greg little and suspended Defensive Tackle Marvin Austin were declared ineligible for "violating school and/or NCAA rules."
Several more players are being held out of the game because of the ongoing investigation. Two probes into the university's athletics program continue regarding possible illegal contact with agents and academic violations involving a tutor who worked with players.
