RALEIGH — A new member joined the State Board of Education on Thursday.

Jean Woolard was sworn-in at the monthly meeting in Raleigh. Gov. Perdue appointed her last week to the open seat left in the wake of former board member Kathy Taft's death. Last march, Taft, 62, died shortly after she was attacked in a Raleigh home.

Jason Williford, 30, is in jail charged with rape and murder in connection to her death.

Woolard is a former teacher at Plymouth High School and a member of several education associations. The General Assembly will not have to confirm her position because Woolard is filling the remainder of Taft's term.
