ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. -- A mandatory evacuation is in place for Emerald Isle to Atlantic Beach in Carteret County. Residents and visitors were told to leave by 5 a.m. Thursday.
Joe Kinsey has a home in Atlantic Beach. He's stayed there during three storms in the past, but not this time. News 14 Carolina meteorologists say the storm will pack wind gusts around 75 miles per hour.
Some people say they are going to stay put in Atlantic Beach. But emergency workers are cautioning against that. While this storm is expected to skirt the Outer Banks, meteorologists say it is a power storm and people shouldn't take any chances.
"This is a stronger hurricane," said Kinsey. "With the previous hurricanes I've stayed through, you could pretty much feel the house breathing with the pressure changing."
The worst weather from Earl is expected Thursday night into Friday morning.
