CHARLOTTE -- Those who help local students get across the street safely could soon have a new supervisor. There are 65 Charlotte-Mecklenburg school crossing guards assigned to elementary and middle schools with the highest pedestrian volume. They're overseen by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, but that could soon change.

The city council is scheduled to vote whether to put the crossing guards under private control later this month. CMPD leaders say they're on board with the change.

"This company that's going to come in, they're awarded this contract," said Rob Tufano with CMPD. "They're going to mind their P's and Q's and safety is going to be paramount to their organization."

But crossing guards expressed some reservations.

"We've had some stability in the last year, and I'd like to see that continue without someone new coming in and changing," said Debbie Formica, a CMS crossing guard.

Police say the new private supervision of the crossing guards, if approved, would take effect in the coming weeks.
