CHARLOTTE -- Three more jurors were seated Wednesday in the Demetrius Montgomery murder trial, bringing the total to 10. Two more jurors and at least two alternates are needed before opening statements can begin.
The current make up of the jury is six women and four men. Three are black, one is Hispanic and the remaining six are white.
The court is now on its third pool of 30 potential jurors as dozens have been dismissed. Some can't commit three to six weeks and others followed the case in the news and may have already formed an opinion.
Jury selection was originally expected to take up to one month but now that the death penalty is off the table, it's moving faster. A full jury could be seated by Thursday, eight days after the process began.
Wednesday marked only the second time since the trial began that Montgomery wore dress clothes and a tie to court instead of his orange jumpsuit. He was also free of handcuffs but was wearing leg restraints.
Montgomery is charged with killing Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton in 2007.
