GREENSBORO — As of Wednesday afternoon, the city of Greensboro officially has its new police chief.
In front of the community and its leaders, incoming Chief Ken Miller took the oath of office. He said he is ready to start working and has big plans for the department. He brings nearly 25 years experience to Greensboro, most recently serving as senior chief deputy for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Miller said his priorities include crime levels, community trust, creating a strategic plan and improving the discipline process.
“[I will] begin evaluating the disciplinary process, so that we can create a process that is fair to employees and fair to the department as far as managing errant behavior. There's got to be a balance there and we're going to strike that balance,” said Miller.
In spite of all the challenges within the department and community, he said he will work to win back the community's trust by keeping an open dialogue. Miller said that he while he won't be able to prevent opposition and blame for problems, he will still do his best to maintain communication.
“What matters to me is that we're taking care of business and we're communicating how we take care of business to the public, that will be clear, the public will make it's decisions,“ said Miller.
Miller is taking over for former Chief Tim Bellamy who retired at the beginning of August.
