RALEIGH — Officials shut down a large portion of the Outer Banks on Wednesday in preparation for Hurricane Earl.

Dare County announced mandatory evacuations for all Hatteras Island visitors south of Nags Head. Ocracoke Island also issued mandatory evacuation orders this morning. Ferries are on a first-come, first-serve basis and all schedules and tolls have been suspended.

Further south, Cape Lookout National Seashore will close today at 5:00 p.m. and won't reopen until after Hurricane Earl passes.
