CHARLOTTE -- Two new voter surveys paint very different pictures of the expected result in North Carolina’s 8th District Congressional race. One national poll shows voters leaning toward Republicans but a local poll conducted by Democrats shows the incumbent with a hefty lead.

A Gallup poll released Monday shows registered voters are favoring generic Republican candidates by 10 percentage points, the largest such lead for either party since Gallup started tracking midterm elections for Congress.

What should be refreshing news for Republican candidate Harold Johnson isn’t stopping his relentless campaigning. He says he doesn't put much weight in numbers.

“It's still going to come down to [Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell] and his ideas that aren't working and it will come down to me, what are my plans,” Johnson said.

This weekend, Kissell's campaign released the results of an internal poll indicating a 17 point lead over his Republican opponent. Like Johnson, Kissell isn’t letting the results change his strategy.

“It's nice to have a favorable snapshot of where we are now but we only know one way to go and that's all out work hard,” he said.

The Democratic poll also showed Kissell with a sizable lead over Libertarian candidate Thomas Hill. Johnson told News 14 Carolina he's ready for debates and is eager to get one scheduled.
