CHARLOTTE -- The Queen City will play host to a major golf championship. On Tuesday, PGA officials, along with Gov. Bev Perdue and Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, announced the Quail Hollow Club will host the 99th PGA Championship in 2017.

In August 2017, Quail Hollow Club will join Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (1936) and Tanglewood Golf Club of Winston-Salem (1974) as the only North Carolina venues to host a PGA Championship.

While the Wells Fargo Championship, formerly called the Wachovia Championship and Quail Hollow Championship, perennially draws the world's best golfers to Charlotte, local sports organizers say having a major will drive in more cash and attract more international attention, all while reinforcing the region as a hub for major sports events.

"A major, being on a regular rotation for a major like the PGA, is about the pinnacle of golf," said Jeff Beaver, of the Charlotte Sports Commission.

The state is no stranger to major golf. Pinehurst's Course No. 2 hosted the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open and the 2007 U.S. Women's Open. In 2014, the course will host both the men's and women's opens back to back.

This month's PGA Championship in Wisconsin pumped an estimated $80 million into the local economy, easily surpassing the $50 million generated by Charlotte’s highly-successful May event.

The Wells Fargo Championship’s contract with the PGA Tour expires in 2014. If it is extended to 2017, it's unclear if organizers would want to host two professional events so close to each other.

Hosting a PGA Tour event and major on the same course in the same year is rare, but not unprecedented. Torrey Pines, in the San Diego area, hosted both the Buick Classic and U.S. Open in 2008.
