HIGH POINT, N.C. — Hundreds of athletes and their parents are pouring into the Piedmont this weekend for a major soccer tournament.

The Furniture City Classic has always been a moneymaker for the City of High Point, drawing in visitors from across the region. In recent years, the state of North Carolina has become one of the premier soccer states in the country. The Furniture City Classic is celebrating its 25th Annual event this year.

David Miller, with the Piedmont Soccer Alliance, feels strongly about the success of soccer in the tar Heel state.

“This state I would dare say is one of the top five states in the for soccer, for quality of soccer, from all levels," said Miller.

More than 135 teams from three states are taking part in the Furniture City Classic, bringing in several million dollars to the local economy—making this soccer event the second largest grossing event for the city behind the furniture markets.

"[The] city really embraces us and we've enjoyed a great relationship with the city all these years," said Miller.

The event raises funds for the Piedmont Soccer Association to help make improvements to the Phillips Park Soccer Complex. The tournament will continue there and at four other venues in High Point through 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
