MARSHVILLE, N.C. — Union County is much cleaner today thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who donated their time.
Volunteers landscaped, mowed, and painted as part of United Way's Day of Caring. Saturday was the 18th year for the County-Wide community service projects. Volunteers from Carolinas Medical Center in Union County were part of a bigger group of people that fanned out across the county as part of the service project. Almost 1,200 volunteers in all did odd jobs for both the elderly and the disabled.
United Way of Central Carolina's Vice President Richard Heins said that is a record number for their annual Day of Caring.
“There are a lot of folks who have the time and maybe don't have the financial resources so they want to make sure that they can give back to the community in some form or fashion. It's something we really look forward to to give back to our community,” said Heins.
The Day of Caring is the official kick-off for the United Way of Central Carolina's annual Giving Campaign. Last year, it took in more than 23 million community care fund dollars.
