HARNETT COUNTY — State officials and military commanders are working together to find a solution for dangerous intersection near a major military housing complex in Harnett County.
A 15-year-old was severely injured last week trying to walk across Highway 87 to his home in the Linden Oaks Housing complex. Residents living near the entrance of the housing complex know how dangerous of a place it can be. It is even more dangerous for pedestrians because of a six-lane highway separating the residents from a grocery store and restaurants across the road.
"This is not a country road. So as you watch the cars whizzing by out here, the drivers are not expecting to cross. So, what can you do? You can stay away from the road," said Col Kevin Arata, Fort Bragg
Both the Department of Transportation and the Army have posted signs warning residents to not try to cross the highway. But persistent pedestrians have engineers searching for a solution. The DOT is currently looking at two options. The first is to build a pedestrian bridge over the highway. that can cost over $800,000 to build. The second option is to build a tunnel and that could cost over $1.3 million.
It could take awhile to find funding for the project and then build it. In the meantime, officials are working on a temporary solution.
"We have a safety project that is going to be let in the end of Sept. and we are looking to incorporate, possibly, some at grade pedestrian crossings as a part of that project," said Lee Jernigan, DOT engineer.
