CHARLOTTE – Some participants in the 24 Hours of Booty this weekend are puzzled over new street stamps on Selwyn Avenue.
Just recently Charlotte Department of Transportation crews resurfaced the road and placed a number of cycling markers on the road. Transportation official Ken Tippette calls the markers shared lane arrows.
He says those markers are intended for thin roads with high cycling traffic.
“It is known as a shared road,” explains Tippette. “It has been experimented with about 50 cities across the country in different forms. This particular form was the one selected to be the standard used through out the country. What we have found is that this particular marking that cyclists keep a more predictable path and raised motorist awareness.”
Charlotte DOT officials say Selwyn Avenue is the only road in Charlotte with those new markers.
They say they plan to place more when needed.
