CHARLOTTE -- UNC Charlotte is hosting the Democratic Collegiate National Convention through the weekend. While the focus of the event is the 2010 midterm elections, all the talk Friday was about the possibility of an even larger convention coming to the Queen City.

“We are really excited that Charlotte is on the short list for the [2012] Democratic National Convention and we hope we get it,” said UNC Charlotte student Tori Taylor.

Democratic committee chairman Tim Kaine was the keynote speaker Friday. While he wouldn't speculate on Charlotte's chances of hosting the 2012 convention, Kaine did admit the Queen City is more than capable.

“Nobody at this level is in with any real doubts as to whether they can do it, and Charlotte, I've been really impressed with the persistence,” he said.

The selection committee was in Charlotte earlier this week touring local attractions and determining the city’s ability to handle the number of people the convention would bring.

“We have some great people putting in that bid for us so I'm very optimistic that Charlotte will get the 2012 convention,” said Taylor.

The three other cities in the running to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention are Minneapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland. A final decision is still months away.
