CHARLOTTE -- North Carolina is ninth in the nation for the number of veterans living in the state. Statistics show that number is increasing every day.

For years, the government has worked to connect veterans with the benefits they earned during their military service.

An information fair in Charlotte Thursday aimed at reaching out to veterans to provide help.

"They've been out there putting their lives on the line basically, men and women, putting their lives on the line and they come home and we've not been helping them," said Ann Douglas of the Southern Piedmont Blue Star Mothers. "So seeing any kind of help for them is just wonderful."

Statistics show 35 percent of the North Carolina population are either military, veteran, spouse, parent or dependent.
