CHARLOTTE -- Officials with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Thursday that 141 teaching positions are being restored to the district’s upcoming budget.
Shrinking budgets forced school officials to eliminate more than 1,000 positions, 580 of which were teaching jobs, but the state did not cut as much CMS funding as expected.
For laid off Hopewell High School teacher Margaret Goodwin, this summer is unlike any other. Even a trip to the hair salon is a calculated move.
"I've been reevaluating my own finances at the onset." says Goodwin "I have to make those adjustments"
Goodwin is one of 580 teachers laid off this year by the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. Altogether the district cut more than 1,000 jobs. The finalized state budget left CMS with more money than previously projected.
"We have to announce layoffs by May to be in compliance with state law," said Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman. "Yet we don't have a state budget until July. It's just not an alignment. That's got to change"
But the added teachers make up less than 25 percent of the educators let go.
"I'm really hoping that the state comes up with some more monies between now and before school opens" said Goodwin. "Even as the year progresses. So they're able to reinstate even more positions."
The superintendent says interested teachers should apply for the jobs as soon as possible. The teacher positions are not limited to laid off teachers. Outside candidates can apply as well.
