WILMINGTON — The New Hanover County Board of Education announced their decision on Wednesday to hire Dr. Tim Markley, who is currently the superintendent in Catawba County.

During a meeting, the Board of Education's decision is unanimous. Chairman Ed Higgins said Markley stood out over the other two candidates, Dr. Rick Holliday and Dr. Donna Hargens, based on his vision. The board was also attracted to his proven track record of improving test scores and graduation rates.

"His sense of leadership, his vision, the fact that he brought some interesting approaches to education to New Hanover County," said Higgins.

Janice Cavenaugh, Board of Education member, had nothing but praise for Markley as she reflected on his proved track record. Cavenaugh hopes that some of what he has done in the past can be done in the future for New Hanover County.

"He had such a high graduation rate, such a low drop out rate. we really need to get a grip on our drop out rates here in New Hanover county and I thought that he could help us get there," said Cavenaugh.

Some students also feel Markley can make a difference in that area.

"I heard that more students drop out in their junior year because it's just to stressful and they can't deal with all the stress and then it would be good for him to help out with the dropout rate and keep more students in school," said Benjamin Quinones, a Laney High student.

Markley was the superintendent in Catawba County since 2005. He spent the first 11 years of his career as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in Cumberland County.

Due to his current contract, Markley may not be able to begin work until November 1. School leaders said Dr. Eddie West will continue as interim superintendent at least until September 30 and possibly until Markley arrives.

Markley will make $200,000 a year over the next four years.
