GASTONIA — Richard Keener said he found a black bear in his backyard on Saturday in the northwest part of the city.
The bear appeared to be looking for some juicy leaves and wildlife officials said that is not unheard of—even though black bears are shy and non aggressive. However, usually the animals avoid human beings. If you don't want to find a bear in your yard, wildlife officials recommend that you do not feed them along with these tips:
• Keep garbage cans inside
• Don't leave pet food outside overnight
• Clean outdoor grills
• Remove bird feeders if bears are in the area
Since 2006 bear sightings in Gaston, Clevland, and Lincoln counties have more than doubled. In 2009 there were 87 reported observations or complaints.
