MONROE, N.C. -- Surveillance video from a Monroe convenience store robbery shows the moments that led up to when the clerk shot the would-be robber on June 24. Monroe Police released this video Wednesday.
They say it shows 23-year-old Robert Young trying to rob the Sunny Mart convenience store on Walk-Up Avenue last Thursday. He and the clerk, Sopia Pich, began shooting at each other. Young was hit and died later that day.
"I didn't want to take the chance of getting shot or having my brother get shot," said Pich in an interview on June 25.
Union County District Attorney John Snyder said he will not press charges against the store's employees because they acted in self-defense.
"There's no mistake that these guys made the right choice and what's amazing is how quickly they made the right choice," he said.
Snyder said his investigation into this robbery is closed. But, he said police are looking into other convenience store robberies to see if Young is linked to any of those crimes.
