GASTONIA – After 44 years of service to the city of Gastonia, 64-year-old garbage collector David Chandler is finally ready to retire.

Family and friends suggested he take advantage of a retirement incentive from the city.

While happy for this milestone, colleagues say they will miss having such a familiar face on the team.

“We'd love to have a whole fleet of Davids, so all I would have to say is what needs to be done, and I know it would be done well,” said Solid Waste Field Supervisor Donna Stiles.

In the course of 44 years, Chandler, nicknamed Roadrunner, has racked up 3,000 sick hours which allowed him to retire a year and a half early. He says he looks forward to spending more time with his family during his retirement.
